this painting was made following a sunrise hike at artist point in the north cascades.
the stars were still out when we arrived at the trailhead and i watched the light grow on
the horizon. after sketching a few compositions in the near dark, the sun started to crest
the horizon illuminating the landscape in a golden glow. all at once everything came
into sharp detail and i couldn't sketch fast enough to catch the changing light. it felt
amazing to catch that dynamic change on paper. i began working on this piece in the
late fall of 2019, and finished it in the spring of 2020 while quarantined in portland, or.
during this period of ambivalence the memory of this sunrise sketch has really grounded
me and is a daily reminder that no matter what, we can rise.
